After a fantastic inclusive day, we are delighted to announce our finalists and winners of the 2019 National Service User Awards:

Raising Mental Health Awareness Award

Winner:

As part of the expansion of Cygnet Hospital Derby’s Recovery and Wellbeing Academy, the team created the Community Partnership Development Manager post to help create new partnerships and opportunities for their students.

Health and Wellbeing Award

Winner:
The Cycling Towards Hope, Health and Happiness project
Rampton Hospital’s Diamond Resource Centre, part of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Patients and staff who attend the Diamond Resource Centre were thinking of new ways that they could keep fit and active. They had a brilliant idea of introducing ‘bikes for all’ to use as a way to help increase their physical activity levels as a community.

The project that won the service user choice vote was Run 4 Recovery and Sylvia’s Bootcamp, from Couch to 5k – Cygnet Hospital Derby, Cygnet Health Care.

Recovery and the Arts Award

Winner:
The Recovery College – Learn to Play the Ukulele
Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke, Cygnet Health Care

This initiative was suggested and driven forward by a service user who was passionate about the ukulele as a tool for recovery. The four week course was fully co-produced to provide service users and staff alike with the opportunity to learn to tune, care for and play the ukulele. The group chose songs to learn to play and sing, culminating in a performance at the Christmas carol concert. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive – as Phoebe from Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke says, “If I can do it, ‘uke’ can do it too!”

Community and Education Projects Award

Winner:
The Another Day in Paradise project
Waterloo Manor, Inmind Healthcare

Another Day in Paradise was a play made to show a day in the life of a patient detained in a mental health hospital, using personal experience and humour to help fight against the stigma of mental health.

Outstanding Service User Achievement Award

Winner:
Bridie
Service user at the West London Forensic Service

Bridie is a pioneer, role-model for co-production and a true beacon of hope & inspiration for her peers. Her unfaltering commitment has helped to shift culture around CPAs. Her philosophy is “just because it’s always been done that way, doesn’t mean it can’t be done a better way”.

The Service User Choice Award

Winner:
Exploring the Lived Experience of Women in Secure Care Services
This nationwide exploration of more than 180 women’s stories, lives and experiences of secure care services has spread hope; has led to tangible improvements across services; and has been fundamental to the development of the ‘Women’s Blended Service’ pilots being funded by the NHS England Mental Health Secure Care Programme.
